...and as cars like this one crossed the block, it dawned on me that I really need to get into classic cars more, instead of just most cars from the '90's on up. I want to better appreciate their sounds and looks and level with people when they wax poetic about classic American cars, Alfa Romeos, Porsches, etc.

On line. Most of the auction houses offer streaming of their auctions.

The Lusso is fantastic. It's probably one of the prettiest Ferraris ever. I love modern cars, but the history of these cars is incredibly important. It's interesting to see the 1970s Porsches going for high dollars. It won't be long and they'll be worth millions.

One way to get started is to watch Petrolicious videos if you don't already. If you don't, basically they feature owners of classic cars who explain why their car is special and why they love it. They're always very well-made videos as well.

Here's one example chosen more or less at random:

Thanks, I haven't watched any of these though they've been posted frequently. Now's as good a time as any to start.

I like mechanical vehicles, and fast vehicles. But "classic" cars do nothing for me.

It just so happens that a lot of "classic" cars are both fast and very mechanical compared to today's appliances. But would I pay over $100,000 for a Mustang that I could get 90% of the experience out of

The problem is that around the 90s, classic cars became an investment, not a consumption, such that enthusiasts stopped buying them and racing them, and businessmen started to trade cars among themselves. That has seriously inflated the price of the cars at auction.

I'm not interested in them as high-dollar garage queens or because they're on one side of an arbitrary line by which I define "classics" vs. "non-classics" - I think we're in agreement there.

That doesn't detract from the fact that I find the Lusso and Porsche pictured to be really nice-looking cars, as much as I'm not aware of the history of the cars or their respective brands. I like the Mustang pictured, too, although people are sick of seeing tons of them at car shows to the point where they exclude them - it doesn't matter to me.

I do wish that cars like the Lusso didn't get snapped up as investments, as you described.
